Acidophilus

Acidophilus is an herb that can be very helpful to people, especially women, and keep us very healthy. It is is a powder form of the normal, friendly bacteria that lives in our intestines (called flora). Our intestinal flora helps regulate our digestion and stool patterns. Yeast also lives in our intestines. The yeast and the bacterial flora are constantly competing for space, and generally they keep each other in check.

Sometimes, however, our bacterial flora can get depleted, such as when taking antibiotics. This allows the yeast to overgrow, which can then lead to a variety of problems including thrush, yeast diaper rash, vaginal yeast infection, diarrhea, and yeast infection of the breast.

Taking acidophilus will replenish our bacterial flora and reduce overgrow of yeast. There are many different ways to take acidophilus. You can take it as capsule and in powder form, which you can purchase at any health food and nutrition stores. Children can take the capsules if they do not have any trouble swallowing. If they do then they need to take the powder form in their milk, juice, or food.

When you are giving it to babies you need to make it into a paste using water or breastmilk and rub it once a day in their mouth. If you are bottle feeding then you can always put a teaspoon of the powder into the bottle for them. Another way to help regulate the yeast in your body without taking the capsules and the powder form is to eat yogurt. Most people are not aware that yogurt has a high concentration of acidophilus. Eating yogurt will help control it before you get an infection.
