Researchers have found a new way for people who have tested for STD’s to tell their sexual partners without feeling embarrassed. Public health educators analyzed the effects that inSPOT.org would have on people. The website was launched in 2004 and is a place that lets sexual partners notify each through an e-card if they have been exposed to an STD.

What many of us don’t realize is that breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it is what kick starts our metabolism in to high gear. The metabolism is what helps us to burn calories.

A new study - that was published in the September 11th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine - shows that an arthroscopic surgery for osteoarthritis in the knee may have absolutely no benefits to contribute for medical of physical therapy or recovery.
178 men and women were asked to participate in the study. Everyone of them underwent the surgery. None of them showed any improvement than those who just received medication and physical therapy only.

A new study shows that fish oil supplements may help more then the usually prescribed cholesterol-reducing drugs that help patients with chronic heart failure. Chronic heart failure is a condition that happens when a person’s heart is enlarged and cannot effectively pump blood around the body.

The FDA stated this week that they will be increasing the warnings about the life threatening pancreas problems when connected to the drug Byetta - used for type 2 diabetes. Already two deaths have been reported as well as four hospitalizations.
Those patients had hemorrhagic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas with bleeding) or necrotizing pancreatitis (in which the inflamed pancreas destroys itself). All six patients were hospitalized, and their Byetta treatment was stopped. The four survivors were still recovering at the time that the FDA learned of their illness.

Research shows that many of the commonly used moisturizers increase the risk of melanoma skin cancer when tested on mice. The researchers from Rutgers university in Piscataway examined the mice after they were exposed to ultraviolet rays - which are similar to that of sun rays.

New studies show that estrogen and the standard antipsychotic drugs might be able to relieve symptoms of schizophrenia in women. Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that has affected 1% of the general population. It is one of the many mental illnesses that is still mysterious to researchers because the brain is still intact. It is not like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease in which the brain is deteriorated.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is the United States largest private supporter in biomedical research. This week they revealed a five year initiative - $600 million – medical research fund that is full of 56 scientists that have been handpicked from all around the country.
The Chevy Chase-based nonprofit, which conducts biomedical research in collaboration with nearly 70 universities, medical centers and other research institutions, hopes to discover long-term medical advances in genetics and biology through the fund.
