Protect Yourself From A Vaginal Yeast Infection

A vaginal yeast infection is one of the most annoying problems that a women has to deal with in her life. A vaginal yeast infection is when there is an irritation and infection around the vagina area. It is caused when there is too much Candida. Candida is a bacteria or yeast that lives in the vagina in usually small amounts – but when too many of it grows it can cause an infection.

Symptoms:

- Redness, burning, and sometimes swelling around the vagina area
- Discomfort and sometimes pain during sex
- Pain when urinating
- Vaginal discharge that is thick and white – but it doesn’t smell

Some women may not have all of these symptoms and some will have it more severe than others.

How Do You Get Yeast Infections:

- Lack of sleep
- Stress
- Pregnancy
- Birth control pills
- Getting sick
- Bad diet and eating too much sugar
- Having a period (menstrual cycle)
- Taking antibiotics
- Steroid medicines
- Certain diseases

These things can change the acidity of the vagina – which can then increase your chances to have a yeast infection.

Should You Consult Your Doctor: Yes. It is important that you diagnose the problem correctly. If you think you have a yeast infection make an appointment and let them confirm it for you. They will usually recommend over the counter medicine (Monistat, Vagisil, etc.). Using these medicines when you think you have a yeast infection – but don’t really – could cause one and even make it worse than it would have been.

Can I Still Have Sex During A Yeast Infection: No. You need to be careful and avoid contact in that area with your partner. It is rare that men can get a rash from a woman who has a yeast infection – but it isn’t impossible. If you do have sex before you realized your problem and he shows signs of problems he needs to see his doctor right away.

How Do I Avoid Getting Another Infection:

- Change out your pad or tampon often during menstrual cycle
- Don’t use douches
- Avoid hygiene products that are scented (sprays, pads, tampons, and bubble bath)
- Change wet swimsuits or exercise clothes quickly after use
- Wear cotton underwear
- Avoid wearing tight underwear or clothes made of synthetic fibers.
