There are many unique types of hernias that have the ability to develop in particular areas of the body. The more popular is the abdominal hernia – but this is not the only one we need to worry about. Women are more prone to having a femoral hernia when compared to men because of how their bodies function.

In order to understand the greatest way to address a femoral hernia you need to be able to find out how to distinguish the symptoms. These will give you a clue as to what could be wrong with your body and help you into making an appointment with your physician. The most popular symptoms are:

  • Pregnancy
  • Coughing
  • Straining during urinating or bowel movements
  • Lifting big and heavy items
  • Straining muscles during physical exercises

All of these can push the contents into the femoral canal inducing the hernia. For some individuals this might not induce any pain – but a slight soreness. Still, there are others who will experience varying levels of pain. When the contents are forced into the canal it will cause a mass that may be seen in the groin or the inside of the thigh.

If you experience any of these symptoms you should talk with your doctor so that they might diagnose the problem and ensure it is not something else. They will have to feel for the mass and do a GP examination on you. Many will do this while you are coughing, sitting up, or standing.

Most physicians will suggest that you have the femoral hernia covered with surgery as soon as you are able to. This will assist to ease any pain or soreness and keep it from becoming much worse. You do not need to let it become larger and turn into a strangulated hernia. These are fatal and need to be treated with surgery immediately.
